Ramy Kamel is a prominent Coptic human rights activist and blogger who has reported on mistreatment of Copts in Egypt and their displacement from homes by the Egyptian government.

The Egyptian government has retaliated against Ramy and wants to silence him. He was arrested on November, 23, receiving his 2nd interrogation and beating at the hands of internal security, without legal representation.

We aim to provide Ramy with immediate protection, medical attention, release from prison, and justice for the police and government officials who participated in this illegal torture and imprisonment.

I am writing to respectfully urge you to utilize your position to push for the immediate release, protection, and medical care, to Mr. Ramy Kamel who was arrested under false charges on November 23, 2019. I also urge the immediate release and dropping of all charges in administrative case 7245/2019 against Mr. Patrick Zaki. Mr. Kamel is a prominent Coptic human rights activist and blogger who has reported objectively on mistreatment of Copts in Egypt. He was summoned by the police and severely beaten in early November, without legal representation. Mr. Kamel was arrested under the cover of dark, around 1:30AM on November 23rd, again beaten, and interrogated without legal representation at the Supreme State Security Prosecution in Cairo’s Fifth Settlement neighborhood. He was charged with joining and financing a terrorist group and spreading false news. Egypt is a signatory to the UDHR and ICCPR and member of the United Nations, and it is reprehensible that an Egyptian citizen be arrested and tortured merely for exercising rights, guaranteed by these bodies. The unjust imprisonment of Ramy Kamel further confirms the Egyptian government’s widespread crackdown against human rights organizations and their staff within Egypt. Mr. Kamel’s case is yet one more that solidifies claims of rampant torture by internal security. It is imperative that all government officials and internal security personnel involved in his unlawful torture and interrogation without legal representation be brought to justice. I urge you to immediately release Mr. Kamel and rectify this egregious injustice. Sincerely, أكتب إليكم لأحثكم بكل احترام للعمل على إطلاق سراح السيد رامي كامل وتوفير الحماية والخدمات الطبية له على الفور، إذ قد تم اعتقاله بتهم زائفة في 23 نوفمبر 2019. السيد/ كامل هو ناشط ومدون بارز في مجال حقوق الإنسان وكان قد قدم تقارير موضوعية عن معاملة الأقباط في مصر ونزوحهم من المنازل بعد اعتداءات عليهم. وكانت الشرطة قد استدعته وتعرض للضرب المبرح في وقت سابق من شهر نوفمبر، في غياب تمثيل قانوني. ثم جرى اعتقاله تحت غطاء الظلام، حوالي الساعة 1:30 صباحًا، في 23 نوفمبر، وتعرض للضرب مرة أخرى، وتم استجوابه في غياب تمثيل قانوني في نيابة أمن الدولة العليا في حي التجمع الخامس بالقاهرة. واتُهم بالانضمام إلى جماعة إرهابية وتمويلها ونشر أخبار كاذبة. بصفة أن مصر هي أحد الموقعين على الإعلان العالمي لحقوق الإنسان والعهد الدولي الخاص بالحقوق المدنية والسياسية وعضوا في الأمم المتحدة، من المؤسف أن يتم توقيف المواطن المصري وتعذيبه لمجرد ممارسته للحقوق التي تضمنها هذه الهيئات. ويؤكد الاحتجاز غير العادل لرامي كامل حملة الحكومة المصرية الواسعة النطاق ضد منظمات حقوق الإنسان وموظفيها داخل مصر. إن حالة السيد كامل هي قضية أخرى تعزز ادعاءات التعذيب الداخلي عن طريق الأمن الداخلي. ولذلك فمن الضروري تقديم جميع المسؤولين الحكوميين وموظفي الأمن الداخلي المتورطين في تعذيبه واستجوابه غير القانوني دون تمثيل قانوني إلى العدالة. مرة أخرى أحثكم على الإفراج الفوري عن السيد كامل وتصحيح هذا الظلم الفظيع.
